Social Ministry

The Social Ministry Committee’s mission is to provide for those in need within our local community, and the world at large, as part of our mission to share the life, love and joy of Jesus Christ with others.

In 2006, Social Ministry contributed to global relief efforts by the Lutheran Disaster Relief and World Hunger campaigns. At the local level, Social Ministry provided support to the Colonial Neighborhood Council, Laurel House, Norristown Ministries Hospitality Center, Silver Springs—Martin Luther, and the Artman Lutheran Home.

For the first time in 2006, we worked with Lutheran Children and Family Services to sponsor a refugee family from Meskhetia. This family of five arrived in the United States in November and we quickly went about assisting the family in finding a home, jobs, and necessary health care. This was a monumental task, and was made no easier by the fact that we were asked to accept this commitment only a week before this non-English speaking family arrived from Meskhetia. In response to our decision to assist this family, over thirty members of the congregation signed on to help in this community outreach, and household goods of all kinds were donated to this family. Thanks to the generosity of our congregation, the entire contents of an apartment were donated to this needy family.

Another first this year was our decision to help make Christmas a little bit brighter for some local needy families. Within two weeks of putting up a Christmas tree with gift requests, our generous congregation donated over 175 gifts to ten needy, local families.

Our Social Ministry members are committed to making a difference in our local community. In addition to ongoing relationships with other charitable or Lutheran organizations, we have worked to provide assistance or support for many ongoing events/projects like:

  • Souper Bowl Sunday
  • Operation Warm Coat
  • Food Donations
  • Rummage Sales
  • Recycling
  • Vegetable table
  • Clothing drives

The Social Ministry Committee’s goal was to expand its outreach efforts again in 2007. Thus far, we’ve organized a fund raiser to send a needy child to summer camp; held a blood drive; signed on with Habitat for Humanity; and raised over $1,300.00 to assist a local family whose possessions were destroyed in a house fire.

Please come out and help support us. We welcome new members.
